New to NVIDIA, the GTX 1660 was announced in March after weeks of rumors that have greatly contributed to lessen the amount of mystery that usually surrounds the launch of new chips. Despite a somewhat missed surprise, NVIDIA gives us an interesting card in many respects, especially from a price point of view.

It must be said that the GTX 1660 (like its big sister the GTX 1660 Ti) is based on NVIDIA’s new Turing architecture, which has proven its worth on the RTX 2060, 2070, 2080 and 2080Ti (which we will discuss a little further).

This change in technological paradigm allows NVIDIA to provide its mid-range with the benefits of the Turing architecture in terms of various optimizations, but also to integrate some of its latest findings (revised version of the NVENC hardware video encoder, Mesh Shading and Variable Rate Shading, among others).

Be careful, however, not to take NVIDIA for Santa Claus. In order not to devalue its RTX 2060 too much, also positioned on the mid-range, Jensen Huang’s firm has equipped the GTX 1660 with a chip stripped of all RT Cores and Tensor Cores. In other words, do not expect to be able to enable DLSS or Ray Tracing in your games with said card, it simply cannot. Another distinctive sign, the GTX 1660 is content with GDDR5 video memory, which is slower than the GDDR6 which currently equips the rest of the 2019-2020 NVIDIA lineup.

In reality, the GTX 1660 is intended above all for occasional gamers, who are looking for an affordable chip that can propel a maximum of trendy titles in good conditions, without having to make too many concessions in 1080p.

AMD Radeon RX 590: the AMD alternative in 1080p

Based on AMD’s Polaris architecture, the RX 590 will likely be one of the last mid-range models launched by the Reds before the (much anticipated) arrival of the Navi chips.
The RX 590 nevertheless deserves to include our comparison insofar as, in 1080p, the card manages to beat a GTX 1060. This allows it to compete with the GTX 1660 mentioned above. An encouraging finding except for one detail: consumption.
AMD’s Achilles heel in terms of GPUs, consumption soars to almost 240 watts in-game on an RX 590, against less than 130 watts on a GTX 1660 under similar conditions. A difference of more than 100 watts that deserves to be studied before moving on to a possible purchase. Indeed, this high consumption will perhaps imply to invest in a beefier than expected diet.

Under Shadow of the Tomb Raider in Ultra / 1440p, the latter stabilizes on the other hand at 68 FPS, against 66 FPS for the RTX 2060 SUPER and 79 FPS for the 2070 SUPER. What gives us an idea of what offers what is already required as the very good value for money of NVIDIA for those who wish to enjoy the delights of Ray Tracing … without spending an unreasonable amount.

Question price precisely, the RTX 2060 SUPER is offered between 370 and 450 dollar on the web at the time of writing these lines. Tariffs which could drop a little in the coming months, but which in any case remain between 70 and 100 dollar lower than those currently charged for a “classic” RTX 2070, barely more efficient in 1440p and doomed to fall in oblivion over the next few months to its successor the 2070 SUPER.

As we saw above, the RTX 2070 can also be a hassle. Not only is its performance nearly matched (and in some cases exceeded) by the RTX 2060 SUPER, but NVIDIA is now betting on its RTX 2070 SUPER. Thinking of buying an RTX 2070? Unless promoting insanity, giving up seems like the best thing to do. NVIDIA’s secret boot with this new benchmark? A change of chip. The RTX 2070 SUPER inherits the TU104 GPU from the RTX 2080. In order not to discredit its premium cards too much, the chameleon founder has however taken care to restrain it a little in the process. Enough to also leave a good head start to the RTX 2080 SUPER, which benefits from a fully unlocked TU104 chip.

As indicated above, under Battlefield V in Ultra and 1440p, the RTX 2070 SUPER can therefore animate the title of DICE at an average of 112 FPS according to our measurements, against 128 FPS for the RTX 2080 SUPER and 106 FPS for the RTX 2080 Founder’s Edition. On Shadow of the Tomb Raider, under the same test conditions (Ultra and 1440p definition) we go this time to 79 FPS for the 2070 SUPER, 90 FPS for the 2080 SUPER and 77 FPS with the RTX 2080 Founder’s Edition.

Price question, the RTX 2070 SUPER is negotiated between 540 and 580 dollar with many online resellers (at least those practicing honest prices). This is already a large sum, but all things considered, we are on more attractive prices than those announced for the classic RTX 2070 at its launch.

Present in recent years on the mid-range only through its aging Radeon RX Vega 56 and 64, AMD came back in force on the market by launching on July 7 two new graphics cards: the Radeon RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT. Imperfect but effective, the latter compete with NVIDIA without however overshadowing the RTX 2070 SUPER launched in the meantime by the giant with the chameleon. The slightly exaggerated price positioning of the RX 5700 XT, in view of the realities of the market, also prevents us from selecting it for this comparison.

Marketed this summer from 370 dollar, the RX 5700, however, has arguments to make. Its first asset is its price. Offered between 350 and 390 dollar depending on the offers and resellers, the new chip of the reds rises to a level of performance similar to what the RTX 2070 can offer and in some cases manages to equal an RTX 2060 SUPER for a few dozen dollar less.

A flattering portrait, which should however be put into perspective: unlike its competitor, the RX 5700 ignores the refinement of Ray Tracing and DLSS technology to offer an experience close to what we found on GPUs old generation, the extra power. Players who do not care about the special reflections offered by NVIDIA will be able to be satisfied without problem with an RX 5700 to launch all their titles in Full HD or 1440p. The others will do well to carefully study the offer of the Greens.

In fact, and especially in play … what should we expect? On Battlefield V, in Ultra and 1440p, the RX 5700 averaged 101 FPS. It’s a little better than an RTX 2060 SUPER, which stabilized at 98 FPS according to our measurements. The “classic” RTX 2070 is also behind, averaging 89 FPS over DICE’s supercharged FPS and its esteemed Frostbite engine. On the other hand, the RTX 2070 SUPER closes the debate with 112 FPS on the clock.

On Shadow of the Tomb Raider, in Ultra / 1440p, the dynamics are different, with only 65 FPS recorded for our RX 5700, against 66 FPS for the RTX 2060 SUPER and 79 FPS for the RTX 2070 SUPER. Even the RTX 2070 (Gaming Z from MSI) is ahead with 68 FPS.

The last “SUPER” card in the triptych launched by NVIDIA this summer, the RTX 2080 SUPER is presented as the only “reasonable” solution offered to gamers in search of wild performance. Just above in terms of power, the RTX 2080 Ti is no longer playing in the same price range, with prices blithely exceeding the 1000 dollar mark. With its 745 dollar at launch, the RTX 2080 SUPER, it remains more accessible, and even pays for the luxury of being sold nearly 100 dollar cheaper than its spiritual mother the RTX 2080 when it is released.

With the RTX 2080, we are also opening the door to 4K under fair conditions. Despite the few sacrifices that will have to be made – especially in terms of Ray Tracing – to manage the latest games in Ultra HD with an RTX 2080 SUPER, the card uses its 10% more power (compared to a “classic RTX 2080) to feel your legs stretched in 4K.

We thus benefit from the following results in 4K and “Ultra” settings. Under Battlefield V, the RTX 2080 SUPER maintains an average of 65 FPS, while its big sister the RTX 2080 Ti (Founder’s Edition) boasts 73 FPS. Under Shadow of The Tomb Raider, still under the same conditions, we count 48 FPS for the RTX 2080 SUPER, against 54 for the RTX 2080 Ti. The title is greedier than BFV (and also much less well optimized), this is reflected in our statements.

Be careful, however, to take into account that Ray Tracing requires you to fall back to a 1440p definition to enjoy a perfectly fluid experience. Under Battlefield V, with the DXR in Ultra, the RTX 2080 SUPER thus managed to hold the 72 FPS cap. A value that

Slowly but surely, we are coming to the top of the food chain by tackling the (expensive) question of the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. NVIDIA’s star chip did not enter the market to thread the pearls.
The price of the beast will therefore be cruel for some, entirely unreasonable for others, but the performance of the RTX 2080 Ti is sufficient to propel any game in 4K without having to make any concessions. Few of the cards can boast of such an achievement. You just have to take a look at our reviews to see that the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti comes ahead of all the other cards tested … and most of the time with a large lead.

In 4K, with all settings fully, no title has managed to bring NVIDIA’s new Behemoth to its knees, the RTX 2080 Ti brings them all to over 60 FPS, with the possible exception of Shadow of The Tomb Raider (definitely), which stabilizes here at around 55 FPS in Full Ultra and 4K.

But what about Ray-Tracing in 4K? Well the RTX 2080 Ti manages to do well in this area. With this card, DICE’s FPS is animated at almost constant 60 FPS in 4K (Full Ultra, DRX included), which also allows NVIDIA to obtain a great marketing tool that we risk being used until thirstier. On Metro Exodus, the other graphic slap at the moment, under the same conditions and still in 4K, we also reach the precious threshold of 60 images per second, but this time with DLSS active. Without it, the framerate drops to around 40 FPS, on average, for a fluidity that remains acceptable.
